Thailand's alcohol sale hours in 2026

For decades you could not buy a beer in a Thai shop between 2 and 5 p.m. That rule is gone. Here is what replaced it, and the days when sales still stop.

Thailand trialled lifting its afternoon alcohol ban in December 2025 and then made the change permanent in 2026. Sales now run from 11:00 until midnight without a break. The rest of the rules stayed: the drinking age, the Buddhist holiday bans and the late-night limits.

Here is what applies in Bangkok in 2026, and what it means for a pub crawl or a cruise with free-flow beer.

The quick answer

Alcohol sales in Thailand run 11:00 to midnight, with no afternoon gap since 2026. Sales stop for 24 hours on some Buddhist holidays, though licensed hotels, entertainment venues and international airport terminals are exempt. You must be 20 to buy alcohol. Vapes are illegal.

What are the alcohol sale hours in Thailand in 2026?

From 11:00 to midnight, every day. The old ban from 14:00 to 17:00 has been abolished.

A temporary easing started in December 2025 for 180 days, as Euronews reported. In May 2026 the government made it permanent: Inside.beer reports the change was published in the Royal Gazette and allows sales "continuously from 11:00 a.m. until midnight nationwide".

The UK's travel advice sums up the current rule: sales are restricted between midnight and 11:00, except at licensed hotels, international airport terminals and authorised entertainment venues. In practice that means the 7-Eleven fridge locks at midnight while a licensed club keeps serving.

Which Buddhist holidays ban alcohol sales in 2026?

Major Buddhist holy days, when announced for the year. In 2026 that has meant Visakha Bucha on 31 May and Asalha Bucha with Buddhist Lent on 29 and 30 July.

On Visakha Bucha, 31 May 2026, sales stopped for 24 hours. In July a two-day ban covered Asalha Bucha and Buddhist Lent Day, from 00:01 on 29 July to midnight on 30 July. Both have passed.

Next is the End of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa). A travel guide lists it on 26 October 2026 with a nationwide sales ban; check the official announcement close to the date. Makha Bucha falls in early 2027, and its date and any ban are set by announcement, so look it up before you travel in February or March.

Can you still get a drink in Bangkok on a holiday ban day?

In some places. Hotels licensed under the hotel law, licensed entertainment venues, international airport terminals and designated tourist-area venues are exempt.

The July notice listed those exemptions, plus venues hosting designated special events, according to The Star. That leaves out most of what tourists use day to day: convenience stores, many restaurants and street stalls. Thai Holiday Guide adds that not every venue in the exempt categories qualifies.

If your pub crawl or cruise falls on a ban day, ask the operator in advance whether drinks will be served. A hotel bar is the safest bet for a beer that evening.

What time do bars close in Bangkok in 2026?

Licensed entertainment venues usually close at 2 a.m. Some in designated zones are reported to stay open until 4 a.m., but that depends on the venue's own permit.

2026 reports, such as this one from Loopliner, name parts of Khao San Road, RCA and Thonglor as 4 a.m. zones, with venues needing an extended-hours certificate. We could not find an official list, so do not plan around a 4 a.m. finish unless the venue confirms it. Bars without an entertainment licence stop serving at midnight.

The nightlife areas guide goes street by street. Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy and Patpong are adult entertainment zones; the tours on this site do not go there.

What is the legal drinking age in Thailand, and do you need ID?

Twenty. Selling alcohol to anyone under 20 is prohibited, and bars and clubs often ask for ID.

Thailand's amended alcohol law, in force since 8 November 2025, prohibits sales to anyone under 20 and requires sellers to check age, according to Baker McKenzie. The pub crawl listing says it is not suitable for anyone under 20 and asks guests to bring a passport or ID card, with a copy accepted.

The UK advice says police may ask to see your passport and that a copy of the photo page is usually enough. The same page says vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal to possess or use, with no exception for tourists. Leave them at home.

What does this mean for a pub crawl or a free-flow beer cruise?

Afternoon drinks before a cruise are now easy to find. On a holiday ban day, ask your operator first, and watch your drinks on any night.

The end of the afternoon ban mostly helps people who like a beer before an evening tour: shops and bars can now sell through the afternoon, so a drink before an 8 p.m. cruise is no longer a hunt. The drinks included on the tours themselves differ a lot, and the table below shows what each listing says.

Two warnings from the UK travel advice apply on any night out. Drink spiking happens in tourist areas, so do not leave a glass unattended or accept drinks from strangers. And alcohol containing methanol has caused deaths in Thailand; you cannot taste or smell it, which is one more reason to stick to licensed bars and sealed bottles. On a ban day, message the operator before you go: a cruise or a crawl may run with soft drinks only.
