Thailand's 30-day visa exemption in 2026

Thailand halved its visa-free stay in September 2026. For a week in Bangkok nothing much changes, but the paperwork around arrival matters more than it used to.

On 31 August 2026 the Royal Gazette published four Ministry of Interior announcements that rewrote Thailand's visa exemption scheme. From 15 September 2026, travellers from the 60 countries and territories on the new list can stay 30 days for tourism without a visa. The old scheme gave 60 days to 93 nationalities.

This post sets out what changed, what the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is, what immigration may ask to see, and how it affects a short Bangkok stay built around a night tour or two.

The quick answer

If your country is on the new list, you get 30 days visa-free for tourism, from 15 September 2026. Fill in the free TDAC on the official immigration site within 3 days before you land. Carry proof of onward travel and be ready to show proof of funds if asked. For a city break, 30 days is plenty.

What changed in Thailand's visa exemption on 15 September 2026?

The standard visa-free stay dropped from 60 days to 30 days, the list shrank to 60 countries and territories, and land-border entries are capped.

TTG Asia reports that the four announcements were published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 and took effect 15 days later, on 15 September. The 2024 scheme, with 60 days for 93 countries and territories, stayed valid for entries up to 14 September 2026. The UK government's entry requirements page now tells British visitors they can stay "up to 30 days for tourism only" if they enter under the exemption from 15 September 2026.

The exemption covers tourism. Short business trips from the affected markets now need a visa, and so do travellers whose country is on none of the new lists.

Which countries get 30 days visa-free in Thailand now?

Sixty countries and territories. Check your own nationality against the current list before you book, because several countries moved to a different category.

The new list is shorter, and a few groups are treated differently. TTG Asia reports that India was added to the 30-day list after pushback from the travel industry, that visa on arrival now applies to three countries (Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia), and that Seychelles and Mauritius moved to a 15-day exemption. Separate bilateral agreements are not affected, including the 30-day arrangements with China, Russia and Vietnam.

Use your government's travel advice or the website of the Thai embassy in your country as the final word. Airlines check documents at check-in, and a refused boarding is a bad way to find out your passport changed category.

Do I need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)?

Yes. Since 1 May 2025 every foreign national entering Thailand by air, land or sea fills in the TDAC online before arrival. It is free.

The UK travel advice says travellers can register "within 3 days before they arrive", on the official site at tdac.immigration.go.th. The Immigration Bureau calls the registration "entirely free, with no fees required", according to Khaosod English, which reported in March 2026 that about one in ten foreign arrivals had used fake sites that are not run by the government.

Fake TDAC sites look official and charge a fee for a form that costs nothing. If a site asks for card details, close it. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an ad at the top of the search results, and keep the confirmation email on your phone for the arrival hall.

Will Thai immigration ask for proof of funds or an onward ticket?

They may. The UK government lists proof of funds and evidence of onward or return travel as things you can be asked to show.

The FCDO entry page says visitors entering under the exemption may need to show proof of funds for their stay and evidence of onward or return travel. Most arrivals are not asked. Have a booked return or onward flight, and a recent bank statement or card balance you can open on your phone, and the question takes a minute.

Two more rules from the same page: your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from the day you arrive, and at least 1 blank page. The land-border cap of 2 entries per calendar year does not generally apply to arrivals by air, so it matters most if you plan to hop into a neighbouring country overland and come back.

What does the 30-day rule mean for a short Bangkok trip?

Very little, if you are staying a week or two. It matters if you planned a long loop of Thailand, or a border run to reset your stay.

Most Bangkok stops last days, not weeks, and even a two-week Thailand trip sits well inside 30 days. Count your days from the arrival stamp and leave a margin. Overstaying is a legal problem, not a paperwork one.

If your flight lands in the evening, you do not need to waste the first night. The midnight food tour starts at Sam Yan MRT station and, according to the listing, finishes just before midnight with a tuk tuk ride back to your hotel in the city centre. What should I check before I fly to Bangkok?

Your nationality's category, the TDAC within 3 days of landing, passport validity, an onward ticket and proof of funds you can show.

Rules changed in September and may be adjusted again, so check close to departure rather than relying on what a friend did last year. The UK page is kept current and is a useful cross-check even for non-British travellers, since the TDAC and evidence rules apply to everyone.

Then plan the nights. Our guide to Bangkok after dark covers the options, and the month-by-month guide shows which weeks are wet.
